FIBRAVA BUYING GUIDE
Understand the steel construction.
A practical comparison of 2, 3, 4 and 5 steel-wire constructions. Steel diameter is not fiber diameter.
Separate steel dimensions from fiber dimensions
The 0.4 mm, 0.8 mm and 1.0 mm dimensions in the Fibrava catalogue describe steel strength-member diameters. They are not the diameter of the optical fiber. Specify the fiber count, number of steel members and individual steel diameters together to reduce ambiguity in a quotation.
Four constructions at a glance
| Construction | Configuration | Steel diameters |
|---|---|---|
| Indoor | 1 / 2 / 4 cores · 2 wires | 0.4 + 0.4 mm |
| Outdoor | 1 / 2 / 4 cores · 3 wires | 0.4 + 0.4 + 0.8 / 1.0 mm |
| Indoor split-type | 2 cores · 4 wires | 4 × 0.4 mm |
| Outdoor split-type | 2 cores · 5 wires | 4 × 0.4 + 0.8 / 1.0 mm |
Specify the messenger option clearly
“0.8 / 1.0 mm” identifies alternative messenger sizes to discuss, not two simultaneous diameters for one wire. An inquiry might specify “2-core outdoor, 0.4 + 0.4 + 1.0 mm, black, 1,000 m per reel.” Confirm the exact model and other performance requirements before ordering.
Wire count alone is not a performance specification
The strength-member arrangement helps distinguish products but does not replace tensile, bend-radius or environmental specifications. Construction illustrations are not to scale; actual dimensions must follow the agreed model specification.
